In the framework of 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, all member states of the United Nations have committed to achieve universal health coverage (UHC) by 2030. This involves now putting in place concrete measures to ensure that each individual, no matter where they are in the world, can access essential quality health services without suffering financial hardship. This year – its 70th anniversary year – the World Health Organization (WHO) has decided to focus on this theme.

In Switzerland, UHC has been largely achieved in terms of service coverage, but the increase in health costs is a major challenge that needs to be met.

At the international level, Switzerland actively undertakes to promote UHC, notably within the framework of international development cooperation. The projects of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) place a particular emphasis on reinforcing health systems in partner countries. For example, Switzerland supports the P4H network (Social Health Protection Network), which supports governments who request it with developing and implementing national health financing strategies.

The next World Health Assembly, which will take place in Geneva between 21 and 26 May 2018, will be focussed on the theme of UHC. The assembly will be opened by the President of the Confederation Alain Berset.
