Birth

You wish to report the birth of a child.

There are certain rules governing the granting of Swiss nationality to a child. The following qualify as Swiss at birth:

  • the child whose parents are married to each other and whose father or mother is a Swiss citizen.
  • the child of a Swiss woman who is not married to the child’s father.
  • a foreign child in its minority (born after 1 January 2006) whose Swiss father is not married to the foreign mother acquires Swiss nationality as if at birth once paternity has been confirmed.

Registration in the Swiss civil status register (Infostar) of a birth which has occurred abroad requires submission of the documents listed on this webpage to the Swiss representation competent for the country in which the birth has taken place.

Registration of birth in Switzerland

An Angolan birth certificate can be requested from the local civil registry office (Conservatória do registo civil). However, experience shows that this procedure is administratively complicated and thus very time-consuming and expensive. If a "Cédula pessoal" can be presented, the procedure is simplified. If a "Cédula pessoal" cannot be presented, a personal appointment at the civil registry office is necessary. Relatives or a lawyer may request the certificate if they have a corresponding power of attorney or authorisation; this document must be written in or translated into Portuguese. Please note that some documents were destroyed during the civil war. In these cases, the affected person must likewise appear personally at the civil registry office, accompanied by three witnesses.

The following documents are necessary for the Regional Consular Centre Pretoria to confirm a birth certificate issued in Angola:

  • The original birth certificate (Certidão de narrativa completa do registro de nascimento) and original "Cédula pessoal" issued by the civil registry office (Conservatória do Registo Civil), which may not be more than 6 months old. Exceptions are permitted only with the agreement of the Regional Consular Centre in Pretoria.
The original birth certificate must be certified by the Ministry of Justice (Direcção Nacional dos Registos e do Notariado Serviços Técnicos) and the Foreign Ministry (Ministério das Relações Exteriores, Departamento Consular).
  • An official translation into a Swiss national language is only necessary if the birth certificate is handwritten. A certificate in the form of a computer printout does not need to be translated.
  • A copy of both the passport and the Angolan ID card.
  • An advance payment of CHF 1'200.00 must be made.
