The Federal Council has designated Guy Parmelin, the head of the Federal Department of Economic Affairs, Education and Research, as its governor in the multilateral development banks. He will represent Switzerland’s interests on the Board of Governors of the three World Bank institutions, the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD), the International Development Association (IDA) and the International Finance Corporation (IFC), as well as the EBRD and the AIIB, taking over from his predecessor Johann N. Schneider-Ammann.

Switzerland attaches great importance to its involvement in multilateral development banks (MDBs) because of their impact and the possibilities they offer for international cooperation. MDBs play an important role in development cooperation. They can also make significant contributions to help address global challenges such as climate change, financial crises, food security, environmental disasters and flows of refugees.

Switzerland’s alternate at the World Bank Group and the AIIB is Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis, head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA). Switzerland’s alternate at the EBRD is Ambassador Raymund Furrer, head of Economic Cooperation and Development at the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO). The governor and alternate represent Switzerland’s interests in these institutions as well as those of the institutions themselves.
