With a view to strengthening the bonds between Switzerland and Georgia, the President of the National Council of the Swiss Confederation, Ms. Christa Markwalder, paid an official visit to Georgia on 5-6 September. She was accompanied by Mr. Thomas Aeschi, Member of the Swiss National Council and Ambassador Claudio Fischer, Head of International Relations of the Swiss Parliamentary Services.

Within the frame of her visit, Ms. Christa Markwalder met with her Georgian counterpart, Mr. David Usupashvili, and other members of Georgia’s Parliament. Both sides underlined the importance of   bilateral dialogue and cooperation at parliamentary level.

The visit included a courtesy meeting with the President of Georgia, Mr. Giorgi Margvelashvili. Bilateral projects in trade, economy and tourism topped the agenda of the meeting.

During the meeting with the Prime Minister of Georgia, Mr. Giorgi Kvirikashvili, the parties discussed the prospects of trade and economic partnerships, focusing on the free trade agreement signed in June 2016 between Georgia and EFTA countries. Mr. Kvirikashvili also highlighted the importance of Switzerland’sdelicate role as a mediator in Georgia-Russia relations and thanked Switzerland for the development projects it implements in Georgia through the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation.

With the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia, Mr. Mikheil Janelidze, the delegation addressed the relations between Georgia and Russia and the ongoing developments in Georgia’s breakaway regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. Switzerland’s support to Georgian territorial integrity and to conflict transformation in the region was appreciated.

„We are honoured to contribute to the stability in this region, which is not a neighbor region of Switzerland, but it is in our interest, and the interest of Europe, that no aggression takes place. The countries, which are not as large and powerful as our neighbors, shall back each other and support in achieving prosperity and stability in the region,” Ms. Markwalder emphasized at the press conference jointly held with the Speaker of the Georgian Parliament.
