Who would have thought, that even back in the 16th century there were Swiss living and working in Hungary? Paracelsus was born 1493 in Einsiedeln, Switzerland. He was a Doctor, Alchemist, Astrologer, Mystic, Philosopher and seemingly also a wine-specialist! A legend was spread from the court of the Hungarian King Matthias Corvinus that in the northern part of the Hungarian kingdom there were golden vines growing. This was the reason for Paracelsus to come to the area of Tokaj and study the vines, the wine and the cultivation methods. Heafterwards helped to spread the fame of the Tokaj wine into the world.

The Tokaj foundation has now inaugurated a Statue of Paracelsus in the Garden of the Tokaj Theatre in the presence of Urs Brönnimann, chargé d'affaires a.i. The ties between Hungary and Switzerland are becoming stronger and more manifold, through this interesting statue and the friendly relationship between the two countries is enriched by another face. This is why Tokaj is from now on to be found on our interactive map of the “Grand Tour of Switzerland in Hungary”. A reason to raise a glass of the sweet golden Aszu wine from Tokaj!
