The Swiss company Stadler Rail, which has had a Hungarian presence since 2005, currently has two large production units in Szolnok. Car bodies for the FLIRT and GTW series have been manufactured and painted here since 2009. The state-of-the-art aluminium welding shop in Szolnok is the first of its kind in Hungary and is considered one of the best in Europe. Since 2013, bogies have also been maintained and manufactured in Szolnok. In addition to the domestic customers MAV and GYSEV, the components manufactured in Hungary are also produced for trains of other railway operators in Europe and the USA.

As part of the TramTrain project, Stadler is involved in a very innovative regional transport project. Within this programme, contracts were concluded in May 2017 for the delivery of an initial 8 units to MÁV-START Zrt. In addition, there is an option for four further units in the future. The aim of the project is to establish a high-quality transport service for commuters between the two cities in the south of Hungary.

On 9 March 2021, the second TramTrain already left the Stadler factory in Valencia and will arrive in Hungary on 16 of March. After that, final assembly of the train will begin here. The technical tests of the first hybrid train of this type were already successfully completed on 4 March and further tests will follow in the coming days. If all tests are successfully completed, the first three trains will be able to connect the tram networks of Szeged and Hódmezövásárhely via railway line 135 this year.

Inside towns, the vehicles will travel at 50 km/h, while outside cities they can reach speeds of up to 100 km/h. The modern low-floor trams are equipped with multifunctional areas and are thus also equipped to transport wheelchair users, pushchairs and bicycles. The 37-metre-long, 71-tonne vehicles can each carry up to 216 passengers.
