Sustainable trade capacities for fisheries value-chains
Indonesia is one of the world?s largest exporters of tuna, seaweed, and shrimp but its seafood industry is characterized by high-volume-low-value commodity production, mostly exported in bulk as raw products. The aim of the project is to support strengthening the trade capacity of the Indonesian fisheries sector.

Indonesia is one of the world?s largest exporters of tuna, seaweed, and shrimp but its seafood industry is characterized by high-volume-low-value commodity production, mostly exported in bulk as raw products. The Government of Indonesia (GoI) realizes the potentially large gains to be made for Indonesian seafood exports and thus requested SECO?s support through UNIDO to strengthen the trade capacity of the Indonesian fisheries sector (e.g. competitiveness of fish exports in terms of quality, price, and production sustainability).
The Project aims at strengthening the Indonesian fisheries export sector, while ensuring the preservation of biodiversity through promoting the sustainable use of maritime resources. This will be done through increasing value-added to exports by providing policy advice to the government for creating favorable framework conditions for exports, strengthening the competitiveness of the supply side (e.g. in terms of price and quality, compliance with international sustainability standards) and facilitating entry into the global value chains. This approach is very innovative.

Advocacy workshops on selected topics relevant to sustainable and high-value added fisheries exports.
Draft strategy on sustainable fisheries exports.
The Quality & Productivity Center at the University of Fishery is institutionally, technically and financially sustainable.
At least 4 professors have successfully completed in-depth training in teaching productivity & innovation for fisheries, curriculum established.
Design and pilot implementation of an electronic catch-identification system (traceability), to be hosted by a (private sector) institution- system usable by illiterate fishermen.
Selected certification provider(s) are ready for accreditation.
Capacity building for industry.
Feasibility study on quality mark and/or geographical indications established- concept for quality mark elaborated.
At least 10 companies that have not yet exported before attend trade fares and/or other networking events.
