On the occasion of its 18th anniversary, CAREC organized an Open Day at the Raddison Hotel in Nur-Sultan, in partnership with the Kazakh government and its main donors. The aim of the conference was to promote cooperation and partnership in the field of environmental protection and sustainable development in the Central Asian region, as well as to highlight the results of CAREC's activities in Kazakhstan with national and international partners and civil society. Particular emphasis was thereby put on integrated water resources management, especially with regard to the Aral Sea. While often perceived as a matter of conflict, it became clear that water can also be an instrument for regional cooperation.

In this regard, the Swiss initiative Blue Peace was mentioned several times during the conference, along with the role of Switzerland as its core sponsor. The Ambassador of Switzerland to Kazakhstan, Urs Schmid, seized to opportunity to congratulate CAREC for its work, to stress the importance of such organizations and to reaffirm the support of Switzerland, notably in the framework of the Blue Peace initiative.
