Vocational Education and Training Laos (VELA)

The Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) supports a reform of technical and vocational education and training in Lao PDR to ensure that Lao youth—particularly from marginalized groups—have access to quality education, can obtain a high level of skills, and can find and keep well-paid jobs.

Lao Extension for Agriculture Project ( LEAP )

Laos is a nation of small farmers with 74% of the workforce employed in the agriculture sector. LEAP was designed to address the low levels of productivity and profitability for the farmers and focused on the weak capacity of extension services. After 11 years of successful work in strengthening the national extension system and moving ahead to open it to other service providers, LEAP will close its operations after a 14 months final phase, mostly dedicated to handover and capitalization activities.

Support to the Reform of the Northern Agriculture and Forestry College in Laos (SURAFCO)

Innovation and reform of the agriculture sector is necessary for Lao PDR to achieve socioeconomic growth and graduate from its status of Least Developed Country. SDC has worked to strengthen Lao agriculture and forestry colleges since 2009, in response to a growing need for highly skilled professionals, who can help farmers in improving their practices and escape poverty.

Empowering Women Migrant Workers In Asia (EWMWA)

In Southeast Asia women who migrate for work are exposed to high risks, which range from gender-based discrimination to exploitation and severe human rights violations. UN Women’s Regional Program On Empowering Women Migrant Workers In Asia (EWMWA) aims to empower vulnerable women migrants in a gender-responsive way and to strengthen their access to effective legal protection. A specific focus in the ASEAN region includes Lao PDR, Vietnam and Cambodia as major sending countries.

Flood Management and Mitigation Programme

Flood risks in the Lower Mekong Basin (LMB) are increasing as a result of infrastructure development, land-use changes, increasing population and in the longer term by the effects of climate change. The Regional Flood Management and Mitigation Center (RFMMC) created by the Mekong River Commission (MRC) has the mandate to coordinate with its Member Countries to reduce the negative impacts of floods. It will support them to improve and implement flood risk management and mitigation practices, like flood forecasting or impact assessment.

The Rights-Link Project

In 2013, the national economy of Lao PDR grew with 8.1 percent, in large part thanks to foreign direct investments in natural resources-based sectors such as mining, hydropower, and commercial agriculture. However, the surge of investments in natural resources has resulted in increased competition and conflicts over land and is adversely affecting the livelihoods of the rural population. In 2008, SDC launched the Rights-LINK project to improve the management of land and natural resources in Lao PDR.

Poverty Alleviation in Remote Upland Areas (PARUA)

01.05.2012 - 20.08.2015

PARUA is addressing poverty and food security of uplands ethnic communities in Lao PDR. It is aiming at supporting Prai villages, which belong to most marginalized and vulnerable ethnic poor. PARUA 3 will strengthen the capacity of government at local levels and the Prai people to establish improved pre-conditions for sustainable development through different modalities of public/private partnerships and private initiatives. By funding PARUA project, SDC has gained a strong understanding of the complexity of ethnic groups dynamics.
