Launched in October 2012, the Nansen Initiative is a Governments of Switzerland and Norway led bottom-up consultative process. It intends to build consensus among states, international, national and civil organisations on the development of a protection agenda addressing the needs of people displaced across international borders in the context of disasters, and the effects of climate change. The objectives of their visit to Pakistan was to introduce the Nansen Initiative to the Government of Pakistan and to learn more about the dynamics of human displacement in the context of disasters and climate change in Pakistan.
Dr. Walter Kaelin, one of the world foremost experts on international human rights and protection issues related to internal and cross-border displacement, discussed a common understanding of the issue, its dimensions and the challenges faced by relevant stakeholders. It was also explained that the Nansen Initiative does not aim to create new legal standards but will facilitate the elaboration of such standards at domestic, regional and global levels where appropriate.
The delegation was given presentation about the ongoing humanitarian and development activities of the SCO in Pakistan that included interventions for human displacement in the context of disasters and climate change in Pakistan. The prospects for incorporation of the Nansen Initiative’s agenda in the current and future projects of the SDC were also brought into consideration.
