Contesto |
Pakistan is confronted with a protracted emergency situation. In June 2014, Pakistani military operation against the militants in North Waziristan Agency on Pakistan/Afghan border has displaced over half a million people. These IDPs took refugees in different districts of Khyber Pakhtunkwa. These newly displaced persons were in addition to some 900,000 IDPs already living in KP thus brining official total of IDPs close to two million. In addition to the IDPs, Pakistan is hosting 2.7 million registered and unregistered Afghan refugees. There are reoccurring natural disasters including flood, earthquake, disease outbreaks etc. The Protection of Civilian is identified as a major challenge in the recent assessments. There are urgent humanitarian needs such as protection services, water, sanitation, housing, health, education, food supplies and overall infrastructure. There is a greater need to prepare the disaster affected population to mitigate consequences of conflict and build their resilience to the future disasters. Despite their good intentions, the Disaster Management Authorities are not endowed with sufficient resources and an expanded organizational set-up in order to properly manage disasters and provide emergency relief services to the affected population. |
