The Gender Equality Council of the City of Kruševac gathered in the City Administration building and held an online conference at which they launched “Get Involved and Improve the Local Community”. The leading local government representatives and the Swiss PRO Programme representative, together with women MPs from Krusevac participated in the presentation of the project which aims to increase the involvement of women in local community bodies and improve the status of women in the local community through their economic empowerment.

Twenty women from the rural area of the Ivanjica Municipality were provided with equipment within the “Equal Opportunities” project that aims to economically empower women in rural communities. The distribution of equipment was carried out in five local communities with the participation of the mayor and the Swiss PRO Programme representative. The beneficiaries will also attend a number of workshops to acquire skills and knowledge that will empower them further and motivate them to start their own businesses.

The street event staged by the municipal Gender Equality Council in the heart of Ćićevac within the “Empowered Women Entrepreneurs” project was the first of many activities aiming to promote gender equality and boost the economic independence of women. In addition to outreach campaigns, the Council will organise a set of trainings to build the women’s capacity and motivate them to launch their own enterprises.

The Kraljevo Gender Equality Council marked International Women’s Day by promoting its project “Horizontal and Vertical Empowerment of Women with Disabilities and Women Farmers”, which will involve the organisation of a number of courses and trainings for women with disabilities and empowerment of personal assistants and members of the local gender equality mechanism.

Within its Call for Proposals under the slogan “Let’s Make Equality a Reality”, the Swiss PRO Programme has supported 28 local governments in implementing activities to empower women. In addition to initiatives geared at the economic empowerment and health of women, and the fight against gender-based violence, the aim is to increase the involvement of women in decision-making and improve the status of women in the local community, especially women from rural areas and women belonging to vulnerable groups. The projects are also aimed at promoting the European Charter for Equality of Women and Men in Local Life, and at improving the competences of the local mechanisms. Over 5,000 women and men will directly benefit from these projects.

More information about all 28 supported projects is available in the overview of Public Call Results.
