South Sudan, WFP: UNHAS Contribution 2016

Poor transport infrastructure, lack of access to remote locations and persistent insecurity present a very challenging operation environment in South Sudan. The only available option to reach most locations and needy population in South Sudan is through air transport. The WFP managed United Nations Humanitarian Air Service (UNHAS) is the only viable, reliable and safe transport option available to the humanitarian community at large to access the needy population and provide them with humanitarian assistance.

In line with the Good Humanitarian Donorship (GHD) principles, Switzerland recognizes the necessity of predictable and flexible funding to respond to changing needs in humanitarian crises. SDC funding to WFP operations allows the World Food Programme (WFP) to respond proactively and to provide immediate food assistance in life-threatening situations.

South Sudan NGO Forum Support

The project aims at supporting effective and principled delivery of humanitarian assistance by facilitating improved information sharing, security risk analysis and advice, representation, and policy engagement among the NGO community in South Sudan. It will ensure enhanced capacity of national NGOs and strength­ened links between national and international NGOs. Coordination amongst humanitarian organisations and with other key stakeholders thus will be improved.

South Sudan, Mercy Corps: Back to farming, Nhialdu

The Bentiu PoC was established in December 2013 with currently over 120’000 people living in the site At the beginning, people mainly came to the PoC seeking protection from violence, but since mid-2015 people’s main reason is to receive food due the chronic food insecurity situation in the area created by the conflict. The situation shows prospects for response and recovery interventions outside the Bentiu PoC.

Constant population movements in Southern Unity due to insecurity have hampered humanitarian access to information about IDPs in many locations. REACH’s response seeks to bridge the information gap and provide a better understanding of the IDP situation in Southern Unity for humanitarians on the ground, to ensure effective and informed humanitarian response to the affected population.

As Camp Coordination and Camp Management (CCCM) Cluster co-lead, IOM – supported by SDC - intends to review and capture perspectives and lessons learned regarding PoC experiences in a review report. The review encompasses descriptions, analysis and evaluation of various components of CCCM and PoC establishment, development and operations and themes.

South Sudan, NP: Sobat Corridor

Due to continued fighting, civilians especially women and children in the Sobat Corridor are exposed to GBV and child protection concerns such as forced child recruitment and unaccompanied and separated minors (UASMs). NP’s intervention seeks to reduce these protection issues, enhance the communities’ protective capacity and provide peaceful and effective measures to mitigate violence and also facilitate aid delivery to the area.

The Yusuf Batil Camp is the second largest refugee camp in the Maban County, with a population of 40’648. With only a few small villages in the area and low government capacities, refugees depend on United Nations and Non-Governmental Organisation partners to provide all essential services such as water, sanitation and health care.

Contributions 2016 to OCHA Field Operations in Africa

OCHA is responsible for bringing together humanitarian actors to ensure coherent response to emergencies and to facilitate the work of operational humanitarian agencies in the field. SDC aims to support OCHA in delivering its core functions in humanitarian coordination, advocacy and policy development. Therefore, SDC seeks to provide support to OCHA field offices in relevant humanitarian contexts, in line with SDC geographic and thematic priorities.
