Local news, 13.10.2017

A Stocktaking meeting and Round Table as well as a number of trainings concentrating on ecosystem-based solutions to disaster risk reduction (EcoDRR) and climate change adaptation (EbA) were initiated in Dushanbe in the week of 9 to 13 October. The “EcoDRR and EbA week” is supporting the International Day for Disaster Reduction on October 13, annually celebrated on October 13 according to the General Assembly resolution since 1989.

The aim of the events is the awareness raising and increasing of knowledge on ecosystem-based adaptation to climate change as well as the demonstration of best practices and practical approaches that have been developed in Tajikistan and other countries.

It is expected that representatives of more than 50 agencies and organizations will take part in the events.

During a Stocktaking Meeting on October 9 experts on disaster risk reduction presented the results of EcoDRR and EbA projects implemented in Tajikistan and reviewed gaps and challenges for ecosystem-based approaches the future. An expanded round table on EcoDRR and EbA, including the previous day´s results, was conducted by experts on October 10. Four half-day trainings on disaster risk reduction using the ecosystem approach and adaptation to climate change explaining the nature of each approach and examples of how they can be applied in Tajikistan will be conducted on October 11-13.

A one-day training will be held on the last day, October 13, of the EcoDRR/EbA week. Notes:

UNDP DRMP is being implemented since 2003 and is aimed at addressing issues of preparedness, response, and recovery and disaster risk reduction. Now is the fourth phase of the program implementation, with the current duration period being 2016 to 2020. The programme is implemented with the support of the Government of Japan, the Government of the Russian Federation within the UNDP Development Trust, and the Swiss Agency for Cooperation and Development with a total volume of more than $ 13 million. It includes such components as reducing the risks of the most dangerous types of hazards (floods, avalanches and earthquakes) using a community-based approach; improvement of disaster risk management; increasing the efficiency of recovery after the disaster.
