Allocation of SDC Funding to UNHCR Operations in 2017

In line with the Good Humanitarian Donorship (GHD) principles, Switzerland recognizes the necessity of predictable and flexible funding to respond to changing needs in humanitarian crises. SDC funding to UNHCR operations allows the UN Refugee Agency to respond proactively and to provide immediate protection and assistance to refugees and internally displaced people in life-threatening situations and underfunded emergencies.

In line with the Good Humanitarian Donorship (GHD) principles, Switzerland recognizes the necessity of predictable and flexible funding to respond to changing needs in humanitarian crises. SDC funding to WFP operations allows the World Food Programme (WFP) to respond proactively and to provide immediate food assistance in life-threatening situations.

On 24 February 2017, SDC/HA pledged an additional allocation of CHF 15 million to support emergency relief operations to help populations facing starvation in parts of Africa (South Sudan, Somalia, Nigeria and the larger Lake Chad Region) and Yemen. This decision followed a call issued by the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on 22 February 2017 urging for USD 4.4 billion aid to avert famine for 20 million people who risk starvation in these countries. Out of the CHF 15.0 million, CHF 7 million will be allocated to support WFP’s emergency operations in South Sudan, Nigeria and the larger Lake Chad region, and Yemen.

Community feedback to Oxfam mobilisation teams indicated that, while households in Khamer see water as an urgent need, they prioritise income, cash and access to livelihoods opportunities above all in the current volatile conflict. In order to respond to identified needs, Oxfam identified a livelihoods and income generating approach to large scale works that will provide water to communities in a sustainable manner as well as amechanism for income generation and skills training.

En Syrie, l’ampleur des destructions atteint des volumes faramineux et le nombre de sans-abris ne cesse de croître. Le Haut-Commissariat des Nations Unies pour les réfugiés assure la coordination de toutes les activités de reconstruction. Depuis le début de la crise syrienne, la DDC a versé 13.4 millions CHF à l’organisation pour ses activités en Syrie. Et des experts suisses ont contribué à développer des standards de construction qui misent sur la réinstallation à long terme des populations déplacées.
