The event, held in Harare marked a key moment in the bilateral relations between Switzerland and Zimbabwe, highlighting cultural, economic, and diplomatic collaboration.
During his address at the function, Ambassador Rey announced the launch of a landmark initiative – the Swiss Arts and Culture Programme for Zimbabwe, affectionately named SSADZA. The US$ 2 million programme, spanning four years, will support Zimbabwean artists by providing a platform for their unique voices while fostering collaboration with Swiss artists.
“The true magic happens when culture and human connection come into play,” said Ambassador Rey. He emphasised the importance of creativity across borders, with Swiss artist Nnavy symbolising the cultural bridge between the two nations during the evening’s performances.
SSADZA is Switzerland’s commitment to empowering local communities and institutions. As the programme is implemented, Ambassador Rey expressed confidence that Zimbabwean artists will continue to shine on local and global stages, as they have for centuries.
The celebration also spotlighted the long-standing economic ties between Switzerland and Zimbabwe. Ambassador Rey extended gratitude to Swiss companies operating in the country for their economic contributions and for supporting the evening’s festivities. Additionally, he introduced the revitalisation of the Swiss-Zimbabwe Business Chamber, a platform for businesses from both countries to collaborate and explore new opportunities.
Ambassador Rey also addressed the progress made on land compensation issues affecting Swiss and European farmers, highlighting the successful disbursement plans starting in October as a step toward reconciliation.
Further emphasising Switzerland’s humanitarian efforts, Ambassador Rey announced a drought insurance pay-out of nearly US$ 16 million to Zimbabwe in response to the El Niño-induced drought, in partnership with Africa Risk Capacity (ARC). This, along with Switzerland’s contribution of US$ 2.7 million to the Zimbabwe Humanitarian Appeal, reflects Switzerland’s solidarity during crises.
As the evening drew to a close, Ambassador Rey shared his optimism for the future, underlining the transformative nature of the Swiss-Zimbabwean relationship. “Together, Switzerland and Zimbabwe will continue to grow, learn from one another, and build a partnership that benefits not just our nations, but the world at large,” he concluded.
The night ended on a high note with a captivating performance by Nnavy.
