We gather today not merely to celebrate the launch of a new programme, but to take a significant step toward something greater – a shared vision for Zimbabwe, where peace and good governance are not distant aspirations but tangible realities.
In a world marked by divisions – political, social, and economic – there is one undeniable truth: dialogue is the bridge that unites us. Switzerland, as a nation, has long understood that no lasting peace is possible without open, honest conversations, even when those conversations are difficult. Our history, forged in the crucible of linguistic and cultural diversity, has taught us that compromise is not a sign of weakness but a foundation of strength.
Zimbabwe, too, has a rich and complex history. This history comes with its own set of challenges – challenges that require us to listen more than we speak, to heal rather than divide.
Our programme, Diverse Pathways to Peace and Good Governance (DP4P), is built on these principles: dialogue, inclusion, and respect for all voices. We believe that peace is not the absence of conflict, but the presence of justice and equity, where every citizen feels heard and valued.
Switzerland’s role in this programme reflects our broader foreign policy: a commitment to neutrality and non-interference, combined with Switzerland’s offer of good offices and the promotion of peace. As a landlocked, small, multicultural and multilingual country, Switzerland has since long valued dialogue, compromise and democratic governance above all else to ensure socio-economic development, stability and peace. We understand that sovereignty is the cornerstone of any nation’s dignity, and we respect Zimbabwe’s sovereign right to determine its own path. Our involvement in the DP4P programme is about ensuring that all Zimbabweans – across political, ethnic, and social lines – have the opportunity to contribute to the country’s future.
Political dialogue, reconciliation, and legislative reform are the foundations of a stable, prosperous society. And for a country to truly thrive, it must reflect the needs and aspirations of all its citizens.
All around the globe, we have seen the consequences of exclusion. When people feel left out – whether from economic opportunity, political representation, or cultural recognition – the seeds of discord are sown. Zimbabwe is no exception. For inclusive development to take root, we must address the gaps that still exist, particularly in historically marginalised communities.
Importantly, the DP4P programme is designed to support National Development Strategy 1 and other government initiatives, such as the Gukurahundi hearings, by creating spaces for dialogue where every voice can be heard. It also complements the Government’s re-engagement process through arrears clearance, by developing a joint vision for Zimbabwe’s development trajectory.
The success of the DP4P programme will depend on our ability to foster trust – between citizens and their leaders, between civil society and government, and across political divides. This is not just Switzerland’s commitment; it is the shared goal of every organisation involved in this initiative.
Our five partner organisations—Zimbabwe Institute, Ukuthula Trust, 4-H Foundation, Zimbabwe Christian Alliance, and the Centre for Applied Legal Research – are all dedicated to fostering dialogue, building peace, and strengthening the legislative framework of this country. They work hand in hand with the government, local communities, traditional and religious leaders, political parties and youth, to ensure that Zimbabwe’s development is inclusive and that its governance reflects the will of its people.
It is the first time that these five organisations work together as a Consortium under one single programme. We are proud to have facilitated this partnership that demonstrates our partners’ readiness to work hand in hand, together with government partners, towards a common goal: supporting Zimbabwe’s socio-political development and its democratic trajectory.
Switzerland believes that the foundation of any successful society is consensus – agreement that transcends political affiliations and personal interests. We know from our own experience that sustainable development can only be achieved when every citizen feels they have a stake in the nation’s future. That is why we are proud to stand alongside Zimbabwe at this pivotal moment, offering our support as you chart your own course.
Let us seize this moment, as the beginning of a journey. A journey toward a Zimbabwe that is inclusive, peaceful, and united.
Thank you.
