Contribution to Education Cannot Wait Fund – earmarked to Africa/MENA

Projekt abgeschlossen

75 million children in emergency and protracted crisis situations are being deprived of their education and the chance to prepare for a productive adulthood. Yet, education remains the least funded sector during crises. Complementary to other initiatives and established in 2016, the global fund Education Cannot Wait is geared at putting quality education for conflict and natural disaster affected children at the center, advancing SDG 4 also in such contexts and bridging the gap between humanitarian and development.

Hintergrund Many gaps remain to make sure that by 2030 all girls and boys complete free, equitably quality primary and secondary education as SDG 4 stipulates. Thereby it is especially important to focus on regions and contexts where education is most in jeopardy. Children and youth affected by conflict or natural disaster belong to the most deprived when it comes to their right to education. Lacking education during crises has long-term negative effects on individuals’ resilience, prospects for life and work as on countries’ longer-term social and economic stability. Addressing children’s and youth’s education and protection needs during crises demands both rapid response and longer-term planning. Created as a result of evidence and gap-analysis from the field Education Cannot Wait (ECW) is an innovative funding mechanism at the nexus of humanitarian and development aid addressing both short-term and longer-term education needs complementary to and in synergy with other education funds.  A contribution to ECW is coherent with SDC’s enhanced education engagement in fragile and crises affected contexts such as stipulated in the SDC Education Strategy. SDC’s involvement in ECW’s governance body will allow Switzerland to bring in its hands-on expertise of development-humanitarian nexus approaches and interlinkages between education and protection.
Ziele By 2021, ECW-supported interventions will be reaching 8 million crisis-affected girls, boys, and youth, including from marginalized groups, resulting in improving their learning outcomes and enhancing their socio-emotional wellbeing and employability.
Zielgruppen 8 million children and youth age 3-18 years affected by new emergencies and protracted crises caused by conflict, natural disaster and disease outbreak, as well as teachers, educational authorities and parents.
