Credit and Savings Associations

Project completed

SDC financed the first phase of the “Rede das Caixas Rurais de Nampula” RCRN as part of the “Rural Development Programme”. The French organisation IRAM  has been implementing the RCRN, and would continue to do so in the proposed second phase. As the project would be integrated into the Economic Development Domain of the Swiss Development Cooperation in Mozambique, SDC would conclude a contract directly with IRAM. The RCRN project has initiated and supported the establishment of community-based credit and savings associations in rural districts of Nampula Province. The General Objective of the proposed second phase is the creation of a commercially viable financial institution serving the credit and savings needs of people previously unable to access financial services, with a special focus on rural areas. To reach this objective, the second phase of the RCRN would focus on strengthening credit management in existing caixas, expanding the caixa network towards economically more dynamic areas (portfolio diversification), and introducing new products (e.g. SME loans).
