The 68th Locarno International Film Festival starts at the beginning of August. Open Doors, the film festival’s co-production lab organised with the support of the SDC, will be focusing this year on four countries from North Africa: Algeria, Libya, Morocco and Tunisia.

The Open Doors initiative is a constituent part of the Locarno International Film Festival. The aim of this four-day workshop is to promote the work of film directors and producers from the developing and transitional countries of the South and East where independent cinematography is still on a shaky footing. Open Doors gives participating filmmakers the chance to make contact with potential international partners whose financial support they need to carry out their respective projects.
The 13th edition of Open Doors, which takes place from 8 to 11 August, features 12 directors/producers who have been specifically invited to Locarno to showcase their projects to potential international partners. In addition, the event will include workshops on current difficulties related to the production and distribution of independent films. A number of projects are also receiving screenplay assistance, courtesy of a partnership with the Torino Film Lab.
Prizes awarded upon conclusion of the event
Once the workshop has been concluded, the most promising projects will be awarded prizes. The first prize worth CHF 50,000 will be awarded by Open Doors together with the City of Bellinzona and the production fund “visions sud est“, which is also supported by the SDC.
Additional prizes will also be awarded by the French “Centre national du cinéma et de l’image animée“ (CNC), the television channel ARTE and the new EU-backed “Investing in Culture & Art in the South Mediterranean“ initiative.
Open Doors will offer the festival audience an opportunity to view works that are representative of filmmaking in the above-mentioned countries.
