To mark this year’s Human Rights Day on 10 December 2016, the FDFA’s Human Security Division is holding a film evening and panel discussion on the role of human rights in preventing violent extremism. The event is being organised together with the Human Rights Film Festival Zurich.

This year's Human Rights Film Festival Zurich seeks to put the role of human rights and peacebuilding in preventing violent extremism in the spotlight. It has been organised together with the FDFA’s Human Security Division. After the screening of the film Jihad – A Story of the Others, a panel will talk about how human rights abuses can make people susceptible to committing acts of violent extremism and debate how this phenomenon might be prevented.
10 December is Human Rights Day. It marks the day on which, 68 years ago, the UN General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The challenges to strengthening human rights have not diminished since 1948. On the contrary, restrictions of freedom of speech, the repression of human rights defenders, and discrimination against minorities have increased in many countries.
These types of violations provide a fertile breeding ground for violent extremism. For prevention efforts to work basic rights must be protected and violations punished. Only this can maintain people’s trust in the state and its institutions and prevent violence.
