Protection of Orphans and Vulnerable children in Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe is on a recovery path following a decade long economic and social deterioration that also eroded public services and culminated in a severe humanitarian crisis with widespread food shortages and a cholera epidemic. Today, an estimated 3 million children live below the food poverty line, suffer from severe deprivations and are affected by HIV/AIDS. As a result of the social effects of HIV/AIDS, many affected children are highly vulnerable as they are likely to be victims of abuse, drop out of school and lack access to basic services.

Re-establish social protection schemes which ensures that by 2020 all children in Zimbabwe live in a safe, secure, and supportive environment that is conducive to child growth and development.

The direct beneficiaries will be:

• 55,000 ultra poor and labor constraints households
• 525,000 children accessing basic services in Zimbabwe.

The most vulnerable households have reduced poverty levels and the children have access to improved child protection services that enable them to secure their basic rights

Results from previous phases:  

During the first six months of the Fund (09.11-03.12), without funding from SDC:

• 7,098 children have benefitted from free support and care (exceeding by far the 25,000 children per year that were planned)
• ash transfers were disbursed to 18,940 targeted households
