Private Sector Development and financial services

The private sector has a key role in transition countries. © SDC/Suzanne Linder

Unemployment and underemployment are some of the most serious development problems facing partner countries of the SDC.  Only if people have access to productive, reasonably paid employment that enables them to earn an income, can global poverty be reduced in the long term and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) achieved.

Private sector development

As a driving economic force, the private sector is accorded a key role in sustainable development.

Youth employment

Vocational education and training (VET) for young people must be tailored to the job market.

Financial sector development

Providing poor households, farmers and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) with improved access to financial services can boost their involvement in economic life and reduce their vulnerability to crises.

In the provinces of Syunik and Vayots Dzor in southern Armenia, the agricultural sector mostly comprises subsistence farming where farmers are barely able to support their households. This project aims to help farmers increase their milk and meat production, and thus their incomes, by supporting local veterinary services (to improve animal health), facilitating access to milk and meat markets, and promoting the sharing of know-how among farmers.

Building a better future with cleaner bricks

Workers packing the fired bricks

01.11.2013 - 31.10.2017

Clay brick production in South Africa produces large emissions of greenhouse gases due to the use of old, energy-inefficient clamp firing systems. To solve this problem SDC is supporting the South-South technology transfer of the Vertical Shaft Brick Kiln. This energy-efficient technology considerably reduces coal consumption and cuts CO2 emissions by half. The first pilot plant was inaugurated in September 2011 in Jeffrey’s Bay, Eastern Cape.

Vocational education and training in Tunisia – Objective: employment

Four young employees at a "practice firm" standing with their work certificates

15.07.2012 - 31.12.2015

Youth unemployment – a major factor in the revolutions that shook the countries of North Africa in 2011 – is a consequence of poor employability in the labour market. An SDC project aims to enhance vocational education and training in Tunisia. In particular, young university graduates are being given the opportunity to acquire practical skills by undertaking internships in "practice firms". Because they have proven so successful, Switzerland’s activities have been extended until 2020.

Although vocational training is the gateway to the world of work and plays a key role in efforts to reduce poverty, access remains difficult for much of the population in many countries. In Burkina Faso, the SDC supports a programme of vocational training in the areas of crafts, agriculture, animal husbandry and forestry. The approach is one of dual apprenticeship based on the Swiss model.
