Today’s global food system is unsustainable and fails to enable healthy food choices for a large part of the global population. More than 820 million people have insufficient food and many more consume low-quality diets that cause micronutrient deficiencies and contribute to a substantial rise in the incidence of diet-related obesity and non-communicable diseases, particularly among urban poor consumers.

At the same time, rural population groups, especially small farmers and their families are among those most affected by poverty and hunger, even though they produce 80 percent of the food consumed in the world. They suffer disproportionally from the effects of conflicts and climate change. Many of them – particularly women and young peasants – experience difficulties to access land, water and seeds even though their livelihoods depend on these resources.

With the current COVID 19 pandemic and the measures to contain it, food inequalities are expected to worsen and food insecurity and malnutrition are expected to increase further.

In addition, food systems are responsible for almost a third of greenhouse gas emission globally, degrade the natural resources on which it depends, pollutes water, soil and air and contributes to a dramatic loss of biodiversity: a mere 12 plant species and five animal species provide more than 75 percent of the total human food supply.

Not surprisingly, growing scientific evidence calls for an urgent and profound transformation of the global food system in order to address the multiple burden on environmental and human health. Business as usual and upscaling of current practices will not only exacerbate the current devastating impacts on health, environment and society, but could ultimately threaten food security in an unprecedented way at a global scale.

To address this problem in a sustainable manner, the Global Programme Food Security of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) is therefore looking for innovative initiatives. With the help of multi-stakeholder approaches, the following should be achieved:

  • promoting social, technological and organizational innovations,
  • making strategic use of economic incentives,
  • testing new forms of governance,
  • changing individual and collective values and behavior

All approaches aim to contribute to food systems’ improvements and transformative and sustainable impacts on poor people.

In order to do so, the Global Programme Food Security launches the following four Calls for Proposals:

  1. Call for Proposals: Human rights in food systems
  2. Call for Proposals: Promoting responsible (VGGT compliant) land-based investment practices
  3. Call for Proposals: Agrobiodiversity for food security and nutrition
  4. Call for Proposals: Nutrition in secondary cities

All the necessary information regarding the calls is available in the respective documents.
