Urbanization has been recognized as one of the biggest development issues of the 21st century. By 2050, two thirds of the world’s population will live in urban areas and much of this demographic shift is expected to happen in developing countries. Weak urban planning and management leads to lagging infrastructure and basic services and contributes to exclusion of the poor and marginalized. It is thus important that governments proactively plan and manage urban growth in a sustainable way. Otherwise, the high potential costs of unplanned and unmanaged urban expansion can jeopardize their paths to economic development and poverty reduction.

Objetivos

The overall objective of the Trust Fund on Sustainable Urban Development is to promote sustainable urban development in partner countries, thus enabling cities to take on their role as driver for economic development. This will be achieved through diagnostics and building evidence as well as translating this evidence into policy and results on the ground. Phase II of the program will build on the achievements of the first phase, so that the main goals of elevating urbanization in national development agendas, improving urban policy through evidence and mobilising additional financing will remain relevant.
