Transboundary Waters Governance for Sustainable Development and Blue Peace
With 263 transboundary lake and river basins covering almost half the Earth’s surface, transboundary water governance is key to solving the water crisis. Switzerland has extensive experience in this field and is committed to continue its involvement with IUCN and UNECE in promoting hydro diplomacy and joint management and financing of shared water resources. The program endorses the premise that good transboundary water management is crucial for peace, security, and sustainable development.

Contexte | Over 2/3 of the world's countries share transboundary water resources, which support the socioeconomic well-being of over 40% of the global population as well as the ecosystems on which they depend. Due to growing population, economic development and climate change, the risk of increasing conflicts related to access to and consumption of water in and between countries is genuine. Water stress is already a reality for over a quarter of the world population, and should reach over 50% by 2050 if nothing is changed. In such a context, the promotion of fair and equitable management of water resources in a transboundary and integrated approach is crucial. |
Objectifs | Transboundary water resources worldwide are managed in cooperation between riparian countries in order to promote sustainable development, long-term security and Blue Peace. |

Principaux résultats attendus: Principaux résultats antérieurs: IUCN: The BRIDGE project has continued to expand its influence both at regional and global levels. It has contributed to the development of several larger projects in the basins where it is active, expanding the BRIDGE platform and bringing confirmation to its methodologies and approach demonstrated by the increasing demands from countries to develop organizations, data, capacity and collaboration with neighbours. UNECE: Major milestones in the global opening of the Water Convention were the accession by Ghana in 2020 and by Guinea Bissau and Togo in 2021, as well as the significant progress on accession achieved by several countries, notably Cameroon, Gambia, Côte d’Ivoire, Iraq, and Dominican Republic. At UN level, the secretariat is co-leading the UN-Water Expert Groups on Water and Climate Change and on Transboundary Waters. |
