UNDP is the leading UN organisation working on poverty eradication, governance, rule of law and conflict prevention. It also provides coordination and back office services to the UN Resident Coordinator System. Switzerland supports UNDP because it is the only UN organisation with a comprehensive mandate on poverty eradication, sustainable development, good governance and conflict prevention.

Area di competenza UNDP’s role is to ensure a coherent approach of the UN Development System in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, in particular SDG 1 on poverty eradication, SDG 10 on reducing inequalities and SDG 16 on just and peaceful societies.  At country level, UNDP leads the coordination of the UN’s response to the 2030 Agenda through its SDG platforms and it provides  back office services to the office of the Resident Coordinator.
Priorità strategiche della Svizzera e dell'organizazione e loro coerenza UNDP is 1 of 15 multilateral priority organisations listed in the Federal Dispatch on International Cooperation 2017-2020. UNDP’s priorities are linked with the goal on poverty eradication of the Federal Dispatch as well as the focus on fragility. UNDP contributes to Switzerland’s commitments to the 2030 Agenda, in particular SDG 1, 10 and 16. It also leads on the reform of the coordination function of the UN Development System which responds to the Swiss prioritiy of making the UN system more effective and efficient. UNDP is the most important partner for bilateral engagements of SDC at country level
Risultati dell'impegno dell'organizzazione nella fase precedente In 2016 UNDP achieved 75% or more of total results expected by 2017. Among key results at global level, UNDP created 2 million new jobs for women and men and 12 million strengthened livelihoods for men and women. UNDP electoral support led to registration of 75 million voters and participation of 290’00 women candidates. In Syria, Iraq and Yemen, UNDP reached over 5 million people with early recovery initiatives. UNDP’s organisational effectiveness has improved, especially since the adoption of a new balance scorecard and a revised evaluation policy.
Risultati dell'impegno svizzero nella fase precedente Switzerland engaged in ensuring UNDP’s implementation of the Quadrennial Comprehensive Policy Review (QCPR) and in the elaboration of the new Strategic Plan. Switzerland prioritises conflict prevention, rule of law, governance and institutional effectiveness in its institutional dialogue with UNDP. Key results from this dialogue are the establishment of four thematic funding windows including on conflict prevention and fragility. With Swiss support, UNDP developed a balance scorecard and it introduced the International Aid Transparency Index. UNDP strengthened its evaluation function taking into account Swiss suggestions, in particular increased independence and a resource target for the evaluation office. Furthermore, UNDP improved the transparency of reporting on cost recovery.

Anchored in the 2030 Agenda, UNDP’s vision for its Strategic Plan, 2018-2021 is to support countries achieve sustainable development by eradicating poverty in all its forms and dimensions, accelerating structural transformations for sustainable development and building resilience to crisis and shocks.  

In addition, to further enhance organisational effectiveness, outcomes will focus on the performance of the audit function, transparency as well as increased performance of regional and country offices.

Through Swiss contributions: 

  • UNDP’s work on conflict prevention, rule of law and core government functions is strengthened (nexus development-peace).
  • UNDP’s work for early response and recovery from crisis is strengthened (nexus humanitarian-development).
  • UNCDF’s inclusive financial markets and local development finance systems that benefit the poor and vulnerable people are enhanced.
  • UNDP’s institutional effectiveness, in particular evaluation, financial sustainability and gender parity amongst staff is enhanced.
  • UNDP’s full integration and implementation of the Quadrennial Comprehensive Policy Review (QCPR) recommendations and progress on UN reform is ensured.
  • The representation of Switzerland as a Member State in UNDP is enhanced through an increased number of Swiss staff.
