On 12 January 2009, Federal Councillor Micheline Calmy-Rey, head of the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA), will travel to Georgia for an official working visit.

The main purpose of the visit is to meet the Georgian Foreign Minister, Grigol Vashadze, in Tbilissi to conclude an agreement on the protection of Georgia’s interests in Russia by Switzerland. The Federal Council has approved Switzerland’s protecting power mandate and the necessary agreements to implement it with Russia and Georgia.  

On 13 December 2008, Federal Councillor Calmy-Rey and the Russian Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov, signed an agreement in Moscow on the protection of Russia’s interests in Georgia by Switzerland.
