The FDFA works together with other federal departments and shares its expertise in key areas of foreign policy.

The role of the FDFA is to ensure that Switzerland's foreign policy interests are safeguarded to the best possible degree. The FDFA works together with other federal departments to ensure that Switzerland is actively involved in international relations and has the right of co-decision within major multilateral forums. It also helps develop international rules and standards, and ensures that the positions adopted by Switzerland are coherent and well-coordinated. With its broad view on foreign policy, the FDFA can balance interests and identify the scope for compromise in the cross-over between sectors.
