At a ceremony that took place in the presence of the Jordanian Foreign Minister, Ayman Safadi, Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis inaugurated the new Swiss embassy building in Amman on the evening of 13 May 2018. The new building is an acknowledgement of the deepening of relations between the two states, which have become closer in the last few years; at the same time it underscores the important role that Jordan plays for Switzerland in the region.
With the integrated embassy, Switzerland can now coordinate its various activities in Jordan more closely. Switzerland has been supporting Jordan within the framework of its development cooperation since 2001. In the context of the Syrian crisis, it has pursued the aim of helping people affected by the conflict and other vulnerable groups live in peace and security. Specifically, it supports projects in the field of education, for example, rehabilitating schools that take in Syrian refugee children. In addition, Switzerland is active in seeking political solutions that can promote stability in the region and defuse or prevent conflicts.
Until now, the political representation and the cooperation office were housed in different premises. The coherence of Switzerland’s engagement in Jordan has been strengthened now that the personnel responsible for the various activities can work in the same building.
