On 29 February 2012 Switzerland closed its representation in Damascus for reasons of security. Since then, Syria has been part of the consular district of the Swiss embassy in Beirut. Although the embassy in Damascus is closed, diplomatic relations between Switzerland and Syria have not been broken off. Diplomatic channels are still open, where necessary with direct contact between the countries’ respective foreign ministers.
