The CTP is an international customs transit procedure which is applied in 34 countries, in the 28 EU member states, in Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, Turkey, Macedonia and Serbia. In this procedure, goods can be transported with a minimum of formalities by suspending duties and national taxes between the customs territories of the contracting parties. The procedure is processed electronically. Every year approximately 10 million transit procedures originate within the CTP's field of application. Switzerland is one of the most important contracting parties in this convention.

Due to the definitive application of the European Union's Customs Code (UCC) since 1 May 2016, a series of administrative and technical adjustments have become necessary in the convention. As a result, the current paper-based, simplified procedures are being computerised. Furthermore, effective enforcement of the provisions in the convention has been facilitated by introducing a new data model and as a result of the overhaul of the NCTS IT system.
