The Eastern Europe Cooperation Act provides the legal basis for continuing transition cooperation with the former communist countries of the South Caucasus, Central Asia, Ukraine and the Western Balkans within the existing framework. Parliament approved a corresponding framework credit of CHF 1040 million for the years 2017–20 on 26 September 2016.
At the same time, the Eastern Europe Cooperation Act will remain the basis for Switzerland's contribution in support of the new EU Member States. The Federal Council will decide on a possible renewal of the autonomous Swiss contribution and a corresponding dispatch to Parliament in the light of overall relations between Switzerland and the EU.
The previous Federal Act on Cooperation with the States of Eastern Europe dates from 2006 and will cease to be effective after 31 May 2017.
