Contribution to UNHCR Programme Budget 2023-2024 (earmarked)

UNHCR is one of Switzerland’s key multilateral partners due to its unique mandate by the General Assembly of United Nations to provide protection and assistance to refugees, asylum seekers, refugee returnees, and stateless persons. The strategic direction 2022-26 concretise the overall mandate of UNHCR for the upcoming years. Contributing to these directions allows Switzerland to achieve in particular the human development goal defined in the Dispatch to Parliament on International Cooperation for 2021-24.


Strengthening Systems to Combat Corruption and Impunity in Central America

The program contributes to the reduction of corruption and impunity in the Northern Triangle of Central America, strengthens the anticorruption investigative and criminal prosecution capacities of the specialized units of the Public Prosecutors and reinforces the political lobbying of civil society organizations to promote institutional reforms.


OHCHR - Strategic Partnership with the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights

Promoting respect for human rights is a foreign policy goal and pillar of Swiss international cooperation, as the denial of human rights is one of the main factors of poverty. With a multi-year contribution to the Geneva-based Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, focussing on selected geographic and thematic priorities, SDC will support this organisation to better play its key role in integrating human rights in sustainable development.


Supporting Civil Society Organizations in Nicaragua

A vibrant and resilient civil society is key to conflict transformation and restoring democracy in Nicaragua. Switzerland thus contributes to protecting the spaces and voices of civil society, and strengthens its capacity to generate reform proposals, promote an informed citizenship and stimulate a culture of peace. It does so by supporting four leading thinks tanks and academic institutes, and by contributing to a multi-donor basket fund designed to foster a civil society response to the socio-political crisis and to provide a platform for aid coordination. 


Strengthening Democracy, Human Rights and the Rule of Law in Nicaragua

The present proposal reaffirms Switzerland’s commitment to foster democracy, protect human rights and restore the Rule of Law in a fragile environment in Nicaragua. As a pillar of its exit strategy towards 2024, SDC supports and strengthens links between national and international human rights mechanisms in a WOGA approach together with the FDFA’s Political Directorate and the Embassies in the US and Costa Rica. SDC continues the dialogue with the government by offering training and advice on conflict transformation and dealing with the past.


Mejoramiento de ingresos y empleo a familias productoras de cacao - PROCACAHO

Familia de la Cadena de Cacao

Los actores de la cadena de valor del cacao centroamericano mejoran su productividad, establecen alianzas público-privadas, respetan los derechos económicos, sociales y culturales y reducen su impacto ambiental. Gracias al programa, 4.500 familias productoras aumentarán sus ingresos anuales netos en al menos un 10%, mientras que 4.000 adultos jóvenes y 2.000 mujeres obtendrán acceso a empleos sostenibles. Esto impulsará la economía local en las áreas pobres y periféricas en las que se cultiva el cacao.

El programa “Sociedad, cultura y memoria” promueve la cultura y la memoria en América Central para impulsar procesos que conllevan a sociedades más inclusivas y menos violentas. Tanto la cultura como la memoria histórica tienen un enorme potencial como creadoras de identidad y transformadoras de sociedad en la región centroamericana, caracterizada por procesos de paz y democratización inconclusos y las más altas tasas de violencia en el mundo. Con su larga trayectoria en la región y su reputación imparcial Suiza está bien posicionado para potenciar estos procesos.


Public Private Development Partnership: Social Entrepreneurship Catalytic Impact Financing for Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC-IMPACT)

Social entrepreneurs (SE) find innovative, effective and efficient solutions to social problems with a private sector, entrepreneurial approach. ODA funds are scarce and need to be used with leverage. This intervention will leverage social enterprises efforts, impact investors’ capital and local government funds for poverty reduction and improved livelihood of low income households.


Innovation and dissemination of technologies for adaptation of agriculture to climate change – AGRIADAPTA

10'000 families in 19 municipalities of the country improve their food security and their situation of poverty by practising sustainable and climate-smart agriculture. The Project will provide resources so that small-hold farmers in environmentally degraded dry areas affected by climate change and variability develop capacities, exchange knowledge and apply technologies for climate change adaptation.


Territorial Economic Development Programme – PRODET

While the Las Segovias region has been marked by high levels of poverty, it is also characterised by its potential for economic development, albeit with only limited manufacturing activities. The programme will promote territorial economic development in ten municipalities and will contribute to benefit over 5000 microenterprises – owned mainly by women – and members of cooperatives from an increase in income by adding value to their products and through better sales due to improved access to markets.


Technical Assistance Medium Term Expenditure Framework, Phase III

The third phase of the MTEF program has two main objectives. First, it aims to meet the demands of the Nicaraguan authorities to strengthen their Medium Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF), and draw on the recommendations laid in the final external review and thus amplify the scope of the Nicaraguan MTEF model and allow the MTEF become a more useful policy making tool. Secondly, the project has a regional component, that focus on the needs of central american countries in this area, so as to contribute to the dissemination of MTEF systems, while learning and adopting the Nicaraguan good practices in the subject.
