Switzerland regrets the execution of four prisoners by the Nigerian prison authorities. These are the first executions in Nigeria since 2006. Switzerland actively advocates the abolition of the death penalty throughout the world, as this punishment is not compatible with respect for human rights, in particular the right to life. Federal Councillor Didier Burkhalter clearly stated Switzerland’s position recently at the 5th World Congress against the Death Penalty on 12 June 2013 in Madrid.
In its efforts to bring about a world without the death penalty, Switzerland also advocates gradual progress. This is why Switzerland expresses its hope that after the recent executions Nigeria will reintroduce its moratorium on the death penalty, which had been in force since 2006.
