Humanitarian Affairs

Since September 2014, the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid (SDC/HA) has contributed to activities in response to the Northeast crisis provoked by the Boko Haram armed insurgency group.

SDC/HA financial support is provided to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), the United Nations (UN) and International Non-Governmental Organisations (INGOs).

SDC Humanitarian Affairs Advisers based in Nigeria, Niger and Chad are closely monitoring the developments related to the crisis in northern Nigeria, also in light of the consequences it entails for the whole Lake Chad region. The Swiss contributions to the Lake Chad Region amount to CHF 20.85 Million in 2020.

SDC Humanitarian Aid provides financial contributions to partner organizations working in food assistance, livelihood, protection and education in emergencies within the Lake Chad region. While funds are primarily allocated for emergency assistance, support is also provided for initiatives that contribute to longer-term local institutional capacity-building, and the promotion of localization of aid in line with Switzerland’s Grand Bargain commitments. In the light of the COVID-19 pandemic, SDC/HA also supports efforts to reduce the impact of the pandemic on vulnerable populations.

Small Scale Embassy Projects

Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation has no office in Nigeria, as Nigeria is not considered a low-income country. However, the Embassy of Switzerland in Nigeria has at its disposal a small credit to support local initiatives of groups whose work contribute to the country’s overall social and economic progress.
