Rehabilitation of schools in northern Lebanon

Following the rehabilitation of 13 schools in northern Lebanon in the first phase of the project, the SDC is expanding its engagement to 15 other schools in the same region. The rehabilitation works are being carried out in cooperation with the Lebanese authorities to help them cope with the large influx of refugee children from Syria.

Background

The exodus of refugees from Syria to Lebanon continues to increase dramatically. The country’s infrastructure is overstretched. In its ongoing support to host communities, the SDC works closely with the Ministry of Education and Higher Education (MEHE) to enhance the capacity of Lebanese state schools and to improve the overall learning environment for all students, including incoming school-age refugees (girls and boys).
Objectives

Inclusion and cohesion of host communities and refugee population strengthened and delivery of education by the state has improved for all students.
Target groups

Lebanese and Syrian refugee students enrolled in state schools in Akkar area in addition to school administration, parent committees, and local authorities.
Medium-term outcomes

Improved learning environment for 4,500 Lebanese and 1,500 Syrian refugee pupils enrolled in Akkar state schools and increased capacity of state schools to accommodate more students. Health and hygiene of students improved through awareness campaign and socio-cultural activities. Maintenance of rehabilitated schools strengthened through mobilisation of parent committees, school administration and local authorities. Students enrolled in these schools take part in awareness campaign on hygiene and health practices in addition to socio-cultural activities. Local communities and authorities actively participate in developing community-based maintenance plan.
Results

Expected results:  

15 school facilities rehabilitated with emergency WASH (water, sanitation and hygiene) measures, schools rehabilitated and refurbished according to MEHE standards.


Results from previous phases:  

A similar project was implemented in Lower Akkar and has covered the rehabilitation of 13 state schools accommodating 3,100 students. Implementation of awareness campaign for students and school administration on health and hygiene practices.

In the north of Lebanon, the SDC is rehabilitating several schools to allow them to accommodate Syrian children who have fled the war and crossed the border with their parents. Swiss Humanitarian Aid Unit (SHA) specialists are involved in the planning and management of the rehabilitation works under the supervision of the Lebanese Ministry of Education and Higher Education.
