International cooperation can help create better prospects in home countries so that people do not feel compelled to emigrate. Switzerland is active in three main areas:
Addressing the causes of migration: Switzerland helps address the causes of migration by working to improve economic, political and social conditions, the security situation and future prospects. It thus addresses the root causes of migration and creates conditions that allow migrants to remain in, invest in or return to their country of origin.
A key task of Swiss migration policy is to provide assistance and protection for refugees and others who have been displaced by humanitarian crises, especially in their regions of origin and initial host countries.
Reduction of migration-related risks: Switzerland's comprehensive approach aims to enhance the positive effects of migration and limit the negative consequences. Switzerland works to ensure safe and controlled migration, especially for those returning to their country of origin. To this end, it works with local authorities in the countries of origin and with diaspora communities outside those countries, and protects and supports threatened migrants and the victims of human trafficking.
