Global: IFRC, Nature-based Solutions in humanitarian contexts
The IFRC network and partners will increase their capability to implement locally-led Nature-based Solutions in humanitarian contexts to reduce climate and environment related risks as well as impact of natural disasters while supporting the resilience, lives and livelihoods of crisis affected people through capacity building, evidence creation, knowledge sharing and fostering collaboration.

| Contesto | People and ecosystems across the globe are facing increasing risks from climate change and climate-induced disasters, exacerbated by environmental degradation. The rapid decline of nature has serious humanitarian consequences, increasing vulnerability to hazards and reducing essential ecosystem services like food, water, and livelihoods. This undermines the resilience of vulnerable communities and raises the need for humanitarian assistance. Women and marginalized groups are disproportionately affected. Working with nature and use Nature-based Solutions (NbS) can help reduce risks and vulnerability to environmental degradation and the impact of disasters, particularly those caused by weather-related hazards. |
| Obiettivi | Increase the capacity of the IFRC network to support resilience of communities facing natural hazards, climate change and environmental degradation through the implementation of locally-led Nature-based Solutions in humanitarian contexts. |
| Gruppi target |
• Staff and volunteers of National Societies and communities • Other NbS partners (i.e. local, regional and global actors, national and local government partners) • Thematic and coordination networks across the humanitarian sector |
| Effetti a medio termine |
• IFRC network has improved capacity to design and implement NbS projects, which reduce climate change, environmental degradation and disaster risks (focus on humanitarian contexts) • National Societies and communities implement NbS in humanitarian contexts • NbS in humanitarian contexts approach is promoted across climate, environment, humanitarian and DRR nexus, together with key partners |
| Risultati |
Risultati principali attesi: • Existing Eco-DRR/NbS tools are updated, translated, launched and disseminated • Enabling action package for National Societies on NbS compiled • Locally-led initiatives of NbS in humanitarian contexts are piloted • Regional and global dialogues on NbS in humanitarian context conducted • Peer-to-peer learning and South-South exchange are fostered • Partnerships for NbS developed or strengthened at national and local level Risultati fasi precedenti: Past dialogue on using NbS in humanitarian contexts across climate-environment-humanitarian sectors as well as providing guidance has been key in advocating for the relevance of NbS in humanitarian contexts. However, there is a gap in converting the current commitments and guidance into: a) capacity – both within climate/environment and humanitarian sectors, as well as within the IFRC network and National Societies; and b) concrete implementation on the ground of NbS specifically in humanitarian contexts. This includes promoting how working with nature can support the ‘build back better’ concept in post-crisis settings. This gap shall be covered by the proposed project. |
