Switzerland and Italy agree permanent tax treatment for home working

On 10 November 2023 in the course of a videoconference, Federal Councillor Karin Keller-Sutter and Italian Minister of Economy and Finance Giancarlo Giorgetti signed a declaration regulating the taxation of home working for cross-border commuters.

Am 10. November 2023 hat Boris Zürcher, Leiter der Direktion für Arbeit im SECO, die liechtensteinische Leiterin des Amts für Volkswirtschaft (AVW), Katja Gey, zur Unterzeichnung einer neuen Vereinbarung zwischen dem SECO und dem AVW im Bereich der Produktesicherheit empfangen. In Zusammenarbeit mit dem AVW kann die Schweizer Marktüberwachung ab 1. Januar 2024 zum Beispiel Maschinen stichprobenweise im Staatsgebiet des Fürstentums Liechtenstein kontrollieren.


President Alain Berset meets Pope Francis in Rome

President Alain Berset was received by Pope Francis at the Vatican on Thursday, 9 November. The meeting focused in particular on Switzerland’s and the Holy See’s global commitment to promoting peace. Current issues such as the situation in the Middle East and Ukraine as well as the investigation into abuse cases within the Roman Catholic Church in Switzerland were also discussed.


Federal Council decides to prepare mandate for negotiations with EU

At its meeting on 8 November 2023, the Federal Council reviewed the outcomes of internal discussions and the exploratory talks with the EU. On this basis, it decided to draw up a negotiating mandate. Before the end of the year, it will decide whether or not to adopt it and submit it to the foreign affairs committees (FACs) and the Conference of Cantonal Governments (CCG) for consultation.



State Secretary Martina Hirayama participates in the European Space Summit in Seville

The European Space Summit took place in Seville on 6 and 7 November 2023, bringing together the space ministers from the European Space Agency (ESA) and EU member states. Martina Hirayama, State Secretary for Education, Research and Innovation, reaffirmed Switzerland’s commitment to being a reliable partner in Europe’s ambitions concerning the environment, sustainable development, access to space and space exploration.


Federal Councillor Elisabeth Baume-Schneider committed to strengthening cooperation on migration with Greece

On 1 and 2 November, Federal Councillor Elisabeth Baume-Schneider visited Greece. Due to its location on Schengen’s external border, the country is facing ongoing challenges in the area of migration, which have an impact on the entire Schengen area, including Switzerland. The working visit by the head of the Federal Department of Justice and Police (FDJP) served to reaffirm Switzerland's commitment to addressing these challenges while respecting human rights. Ms Baume-Schneider and her Greek counterpart, Minister of Migration and Asylum Dimitris Kairidis, launched a Swiss-funded project for asylum seekers and refugees in Athens. At the end of the trip, she also visited various facilities on the island of Lesbos.


Federal Councillor Elisabeth Baume-Schneider on a working visit to Greece

Federal Councillor Elisabeth Baume-Schneider will travel to Greece on 1 and 2 November for a working visit. The trip will focus on the challenges associated with migration. Switzerland is financially supporting Greece, a country that lies on Schengen’s external border, in addressing these challenges. The programme will include bilateral talks with the Greek minister of migration and asylum, Dimitris Kairidis, and a visit to various facilities in Athens and Lesbos.



26th meeting of the Swiss-EU Joint AFMP Committee

Horizon package: Confederation funds further transitional measures for mono-beneficiary projects

The Confederation will provide funding for transitional measures for the 2024 Starting and Consolidator Grants of the European Research Council (ERC). This was decided by the Federal Council on 25 October 2023. Owing to Switzerland’s current non-association status in the Horizon package, researchers here are not eligible to participate in the corresponding European calls for proposals.


EUSALP in Bad Ragaz: Switzerland hands over the wheel to Slovenia

The European Strategy for the Alpine Region (EUSALP) has served as a joint tool for the Alpine countries and regions to improve cross-border cooperation in the Alps since 2015. During this year's Swiss Presidency (Confederation and cantons), EUSALP has been streamlined in terms of organisation and content to enable it to focus even more closely on its core interests in the future. At today's EUSALP General Assembly in Bad Ragaz, Switzerland handed over the organisation's presidency to Slovenia.
