Emission Reduction in Cities - Solid Waste Management IND

Projet terminé

Cities are important producers of greenhouse gases and at the same time highly affected by the impact of climate change, e. g. by more frequent flooding events which lead amongst others to loss of property and a spread of diseases. Solid waste management is part of Indonesia's strategy to address climate change. The programme foresees to support investments in solid waste treatment in different Indonesian cities, which have climate impacts. Besides the investments, consulting services are foreseen to support city efforts to manage their solid waste in a sustainable way. As a complementary component, the Swiss research institute Eawag will carry out applied research to identify market opportunities for recycling of organic waste and will develop these technologies in a showcase pilot situation.

Contexte

Cities are important producers of greenhouse gases and at the same time highly affected by the impacts of climate change, e.g. by more frequent flooding events which lead amongst others to loss of property and a spread of diseases. Indonesia has taken up the topic of climate change and presented a strategy comprising both adaptation and mitigation measures that cities can take. Solid waste measures are mentioned amongst the activity fields for the cooperation with donors.

Objectifs

The overall objective is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from solid waste disposal through sustainable investments in solid waste management in selected cities and to improve the environmental and hygienic situation in Indonesian cities.

Effets à moyen terme

The outcomes of the programme are expected to encompass the construction of sorting plants, organic waste treatment facilites (e.g. composting plants) and sanitary landfills including sealing systems, leachate treatment and landfill gas flaring as well as the professional closure or rehabilitation of existing landfills in the selected cities.

Furthermore, the capacity of the respective urban sanitation agencies will be improved in order to sustainably manage the new solid waste management systems.
