Project completed
Cyclone Freddy, the longest sustained storm ever recorded, recently wreaked havoc in southern Malawi and Mozambique leaving many without food, shelter, access to clean water and health. The cyclone further deteriorated a situation already dire due to a cholera outbreak. This contribution aims at providing emergency relief assistance to communities in southern Malawi that have been affected by the consequences of the cyclone. In Malawi alone, almost six million people need urgent aid.

- To contribute to the ongoing efforts by the international community to reduce high rates of illness and death caused by poor nutrition, lack of clean and safe water, & poor sanitation in Malawi.
- To mitigate the spread of diseases and pro vide essential care in displacement sites.
- To ensure that children and adolescents are protected from violence, abuse, exploitation and neglect.
- Provide lifesaving essential drugs and supplies, integrated mobile clinics, provide support to vaccination campaigns, sub-national level coordination.
- Provide a minimum package of protection services in 25 IDP camps.
- Provide a helpline service for IDP5 especially children and adolescents.

| Background | Malawi is currently facing its worst humanitarian crisis with 5.9 million people in urgent need of hu manitarian support. A cholera outbreak, the coun try’s deadliest on record, has claimed more than 1,500 lives. Health concerns continue to rise due to the consequences of the cyclone that has hit the country recently, with over 83 health facilities in the south having been damaged or destroyed. With limited resources and capacity (e.g. one helicopter to assess damages in the whole country), access to the affected areas is significantly limited delaying the finalisation of the revised Flash Appeal by the Government and UN partners. The UN Cholera and Flood Appeal for Malawi seeks to mobilize USD 116 million (USD 46 million for cholera, and USD 70 million for the floods). Humanitarian assis tance is needed in several sectors, including food security, health, nutrition, WASH, shelter and pro tection. Switzerland, through the SOC Office in Harare, provided emergency assistance to Malawi in April 2022 via the WFP to respond to the effects of tropical storm Anna. |

| Coordination with other projects and actors | The project will be implemented by UNICEF Malawi which is responding to the emergency under the health and protection clusters. UNICEF has the requisite organizational ca pacity and broad international experience in emergency projects. Through the office of the UN Resident Coordinator, UNICEF is coordinating closely with the relevant government de partments. |
