Urban Water Security Project

Projet terminé

The project seeks to increase climate resilience of urban water supply and to improve wastewater management with a special emphasis on skills development. It will focus on improving cooperation and establishing partnerships locally, regionally as well as between Peru and Switzerland/Germany. The project is implemented by the German GIZ.

Contexte

Peru's urban areas are confronted with severe issues in continuity of water supply, quality of service and infrastructure performance. The challenges are expected to be further exacerbated by climate change and the continuing urbanization in Peru. This causes an increasing demand of water resources and leads to increasingly severe water pollution through the discharge of untreated wastewater. Pollution is increasing water scarcity and is thus an impediment for further economic development of the country. Another key bottleneck for improving the performance of the water sector are skills at technical level.

Objectifs

The main objective of the project is to ensure water security through wastewater management and climate resilient urban water management for Peru's growing urban population.

Improved wastewater management will reduce the pollution of surface and groundwater. The availability of reusable clean water in the environment will increase, reducing the need for intense treatment of fresh water. For the same purpose of higher water security, urban water resources management shall be improved and become more climate resilient. This is particularly important in the dry coastal region of Peru, which is Peru?s area most affected by climate change and the highly water dependent economic driver of the country. For systemic change, the project will seek, next to institutional and organizational development, to strengthen skills development by extending and improving the dual vocational training system and by improving the education of engineers.

Effets à moyen terme

Component 1 has the objective to ensure the availability of water for water supply in the long term through disaster risk reduction and adaptation to climate change in the water sector.

Component 2 aims at building the capacities at institutional, organizational and individual level to protect water resources from domestic and industrial contamination.

Component 3 has the objective to ensure that the vocational training and tertiary education systems meet the demand of the sector.

Component 4 has the objective to support the alignment of national strategies of the water and sanitation sector with the NDCs and SDG 6.1 ? 6.3.

Résultats

Principaux résultats attendus:
