National Water Resources Management Project in Uzbekistan (NWRM)

01.01.2024 - 31.12.2027

The project supports the water sector reform through the development and operationalization of strategic and regulatory framework based on a full-fledged integrated water resources management approach, embracing all water users and multi-actors’ space aligned with administrative changes. This will allow to achieve climate change resilience, food and water security, increased water productivity and improved livelihoods of the rural population in Uzbekistan.


Strengthening Water and Sanitation and Protection of Water Resources in Uzbekistan

01.12.2023 - 31.12.2026

The project will strengthen Uzbekistan in water and sanitation with a focus on protection of water resources. This contribution is designed in the frame of the UNECE led and implemented Assistance and Cooperation Program and shall support Uzbekistan’s accession to and implementation of the Protocol on Water and Health and the Industrial Accidents Convention as part of protecting human health, well-being and the environment through improving water management, the protection of water eco-systems, and reducing water-related diseases.


Contribution to UNESCO project: Empowering the government and citizens of Uzbekistan by strengthening access to information, accountability of institutions and media competence

01.10.2023 - 30.09.2026

The project will strengthen citizen’s access to information, accountability and transparency of governmental institutions and enhance the quality of the media and information landscape in Uzbekistan. UNESCO as implementing partner has a solid partnership with the government and supports ongoing legislative reforms with expertise, ensuring alignment with international standards, capacity building for key government stakeholders (incl. judiciary, law enforcement bodies) and media competence of professionals.


Contribution to OHCHR capacity strenght

01.10.2023 - 31.12.2025

The project aims to strengthen the protection and promotion of human rights in Uzbekistan ensuring justice for victims of human rights abuses, enhancing civic space, integrating human rights principles into development and implementing UN Human Rights Mechanisms recommendation. Upon invitation by the President of Uzbekistan OHCHR has expanded its presence in the country. 


Central Asia Arts and Culture Programme 2.0. (CAACP 2.0.)

01.07.2023 - 30.06.2027

The objective of the Central Asia Arts and Culture Programme (CAACP) is to foster the further development of a vibrant and open art and culture scene that contributes to preserving freedom of expression and enhancing social cohesion in the region. The CAACP offers cultural institutions and artists opportunities to create a platform that enables people, including left-behind groups, to address issues affecting their lives and contribute to positive social change.


Climate-sensitive Water Resources Management in Central Asia

01.06.2023 - 31.05.2027

The Climate Sensitive Water Resources Management in Central Asia project strengthens national and regional organisations responsible for water resource management in Central Asia to implement climate-sensitive integrated water resources management in a regionally coordinated manner. Switzerland will contribute to this initiative which is designed in the frame of the German led, GIZ implemented Green Central Asia High-Level Platform. 


Climate Resilient Integrated Water Resources Management in the Zarafshan River Basin in Uzbekistan

In Uzbekistan and across Central Asia, climate change has significant impacts on the availability of water resources. Building upon Switzerland’s engagement in the water sector reform in Uzbekistan, the program promotes climate resilient integrated water resources management in the Zarafshan River ZRB basin to enhance people’s livelihoods and to inform water sector reform processes and climate change policies at national and regional levels.


Cryospheric Observation and Modelling for improved Adaptation in Central Asia (CROMO-ADAPT)

01.04.2021 - 31.12.2025

Climate change in Central Asia mountain regions will have significant impacts on water availability and occurrence of natural hazards. This project strengthens the glacier, snow and permafrost monitoring systems and capacities in Central Asia, develops user-oriented climate information services, and supports the planning of adaptation measures to increase resilience to climate change. The project builds on Swiss expertise in monitoring and adaptation in alpine water and disaster risk management.


Facilitating Safe and Skilled Migration on the Central Asia - Russian Federation/Kazakhstan Corridor

01.12.2020 - 31.05.2026

Labor migration to Russia and Kazakhstan constitute a lifeline for millions of families in Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan, but its poor regulation negatively affects its development benefits. The program aims at enhancing labor mobility governance along the Central Asia-Russia/Kazakhstan migration corridor. By facilitating pre-departure orientation and skills-matching interventions for prospective migrants, it will foster migrant workers’ protection and enhancethe livelihood perspectives for the poorest in Central Asia. The program builds on Swiss migration expertise and contributes to the strategic link between international cooperation and migration policy.


Project completed

Mitigating the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic on migrants and their families from Central Asia .

01.08.2020 - 31.05.2021

Migrants from CA and their families are severely impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic. Hundreds of thousands stranded in the RF without income or social protection. Their families are affected too, as they depend on remittances, which do not flow anymore due to the crisis. Contributing to the IOM response plan, Switzerland ensures that migration data gaps are addressed, that the most vulnerable migrants receive assistance, and that migrants’ families get increased access to digital remittances. 


Support to Vocational Education and Training (VET) Reforms in Uzbekistan

01.08.2020 - 31.12.2025

The main goal of the Support to Vocational Education and Training Reforms Project (SVRP) is to contribute to more gainful employment of VET graduates through improved access to the labour market. This will be achieved through a systemic approach supporting capacity development and better coordination among key government institutions and VET providers, by contributing to the development of better quality inputs, teacher training and by facilitating stronger participation of economic actors in the VET system.

National Water Resource Management Project in Uzbekistan

The project supports the water sector reform through the development of an Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) - based strategic framework that ensures equitable and fair water distribution among all water users. This will allow the Ministry of Water Resources (MoWR) to efficiently and effectively manage water resources leading to increased water productivity and improved livelihoods of the rural population in Uzbekistan.
