War material exports: Federal Council monitoring situation in Yemen

Bern, Press releases, 13.05.2015

Since the end of March, a Saudi-led coalition has been fighting Houthi rebels in Yemen. The Federal Council is monitoring the situation closely. Applications for exports of war materials to the region are being assessed by SECO and the FDFA on a case-by-case basis under war material legislation.

On 26 March, a coalition led by Saudi Arabia began an air offensive against Houthi rebels in Yemen. On 21 April, Saudi Arabia officially declared the air attacks to be over and announced that the coalition would be concentrating on anti-terrorist measures, humanitarian aid and efforts to seek a political solution. Sporadic air attacks continued to occur, however.

Since 27 March, SECO has retained applications for exports of war material to states involved in the conflict thereby freeing itself of time constraints and enabling it to take account of developments in the situation. Decisions on pending and new applications for the export of war material to states involved in the conflict are to be taken on a case-by-case basis in accordance with export regulations under war material legislation and existing Federal Council practice. The Federal Council will continue to monitor closely activities in and around Yemen.
