The unpredictable nature of epidemics and the humanitarian situation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo pose a challenge. The Democratic Republic of the Congo is experiencing the tenth Ebola outbreak in the country's history. The Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) and Medair have mounted a rapid and flexible response to stop the virus from spreading in North Kivu province.

Support to the reform of mental health services in Moldova

In 2013 Switzerland started supporting Republic of Moldova in a systemic reform of the mental health (MH), aimed at bringing MH services closer to users by providing treatment in a community setting. The project second phase will contribute to further increase the access to and utilization of quality community-based mental health services and health education programs by the means of a nationwide scaling-up.

Remote sensing-based Information and Insurance for Crops in Emerging economies (RIICE) - Phase 3

Extreme weather events increasingly affect small-scale producers in Asia. Satellites and other information technologies present tremendous potential for improved country-wide monitoring of crop growth and insurance solutions for extreme weather events. With RIICE, SDC supports the integration of expertise from Swiss private actors and international public research centres toward modernizing public agricultural services and crop insurance programmes, offering performant solutions to Governments and producers to cope with production shortfalls.

Innovative Vector Control Consortium (IVCC)

Vector-borne diseases are a major cause of mortality and morbidity, and hamper economic progress of the poorest. Vector control (VC) is a highly cost-effective measure to address neglected tropical diseases and malaria, but research and development for better VC products remains insufficient. Innovative Vector Control Consortium is the only product development partnership for VC and has a unique position to address this market failure.

Private Sector Development in Southwest Serbia

The Project – a mandate to the Regional Development Agency Zlatibor – will contribute to increased income and employment opportunities of Southwest Serbia’s inhabitants, especially young people and women. This will be achieved by improving the performance (inclusive growth and access to relevant services) of the tourism and traditional products sectors. The project is an essential part of SDCs commitment towards supporting growth of income and employment through private sector development in Serbia.

The national parliamentary elections foreseen for late 2018 will be important for Bangladesh’s future development. The risk of political unrest and violence in the run-up to the elections is likely to increase. Against this background a number of like-minded development partners have agreed on a package of accompanying measures to contribute to peaceful elections. Scaling Up Youth Employment in Agriculture Initiative

Education systems in Southern Africa do not prepare youth for work; they cannot access or create economic opportunities and ignore the available options. The project will scale up in Southern Africa a model already tested by Switzerland in Tanzania. It will improve (self)-employment of 20’000 young women and men in Zimbabwe and Zambia by strengthening their skills and matching them with existing job opportunities, thereby contributing to the implementation of youth policies in-country and regionally.

Solar irrigation for Agriculture Resilience (SoLAR)

Farmers increasingly rely on irrigation to counter rising temperature and rainfall variability, leading to growth in energy demand and depletion of groundwater resources. The project aims to promote solar irrigation as a water-energy solution for climate-resilient and socially inclusive agrarian livelihoods in South Asia. Swiss innovation in groundwater monitoring through electricity use, efficient solar pumps and smart micro grids will be applied in the partner countries.

Advancing Access to Better Diagnostics for Febrile Childhood Illnesses

Despite enormous progress in reducing child death in low and middle-income countries, still too many children die due to wrong diagnosis and treatment. A high proportion receives antibiotics although they do not suffer from bacterial infections. The proposed initiative strives to accelerate the uptake of innovative, affordable and easy-to-use diagnostics that help health workers differentiate between different causes of fever and give appropriate treatment. This will contribute to reduced use of antibiotics, better health and less antimicrobial resistance.

The Integrated Seed Sector Development in Africa project assesses critical factors of the seed sector in the continent and offers innovative solutions that respond to the diversity of needs of African smallholders, bringing together the assets of informal, intermediary and formal seed systems. Through its existing seed sector related engagement, SDC is well placed to support policies at country and African Union levels.

Safer Migration (SaMI III) project

Labour migration is positively affecting Nepal’s socio-economic development with remittances significantly reducing poverty. Nevertheless, the rights of migrants are often violated. The Safer Migration project will empower migrants and their families and strengthen government protection mechanisms. The project will benefit about 600’000 men and women in three states of Nepal and enable about 60 local governments to run foreign employment services.
