Core Contribution to the Regional Cooperation Council

The Regional Cooperation Council was officially launched in 2008 as the successor to the Stability Pact for South Eastern Europe. The Berlin Process in 2014 gave a new impetus to the regional cooperation and positioned the Council as a medium for communication between the Western Balkan and the EU. It represents an important tool for fostering the stability in the region by bringing together 46 countries, international organisations and banks, mainly from the EU, South East Europe and Western Balkans.
Support to Principled Humanitarian Actions in Ukraine

Humanitarian needs in Ukraine remain persistent and compounded, especially in area where access is compromised due to security constraints or Russian military occupation. Switzerland is willing to support initiatives that advance practices, policies and understanding of humanitarian needs and dynamics, including improving the safety of humanitarian workers and the protection of vulnerable groups. In a highly politicized environment, a sound and principled humanitarian response needs to be upheld, coherently with Swiss humanitarian traditions.

Fin mai 2023, on comptait plus de deux millions de déplacés internes au Burkina Faso, 6’150 écoles fermées et plus d’un million d’élèves affectés par la situation sécuritaire. Dans ce contexte, la Suisse et l’Union Européenne joignent leurs forces pour cofinancer les programmes des ONG Enfants du Monde et Educo. La capacité du système éducatif à offrir une éducation inclusive, sûre et de qualité aux déplacés internes et aux populations hôtes dans trois régions à forts défis sécuritaires est renforcée.
City Regions Food Systems (RUNRES)

Implemented by the Group of Sustainable Agroecosystems at ETHZ and local partners, RUNRES will improve the resilience of food systems in four different rural-urban regions across Africa. It will encourage organic and human waste recycling by implementing and scaling of viable innovations to transform waste into soil amendments or animal feed to serve as an input for agricultural production of smallholders, thereby contributing to food security, and human and environmental health in city region food systems.

Ukraine, UNOCHA contribution 2023 for Ukraine Humanitarian Fund (UHF)

UNOCHA’s Ukraine Humanitarian Fund (UHF) is a strategic and vital tool available to donors to pool their contributions into single, unearmarked funds to enable humanitarian partners to deliver timely, coordinated and principled assistance within the framework of Humanitarian Response Plans (HRPs) and Flash Appeals. The UHF thus enables a flexible and inclusive humanitarian response, strategically maximizing available resources.

Russia’s military aggression against Ukraine in February 2022, has caused widespread death, destruction, displacement and human suffering, and left at least 17.6 million people in need of multisectoral humanitarian assistance in 2023. UNHCR response targets 3.6 million people in Ukraine, and 2.4 million who have fled to other countries in the Europe region; appealing for USD 1.1 billion in 2023 to support the needs of affected populations.
Skills Development for Youth Employment – SKYE

The public Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) system in Nigeria doesn’t offer its youth a formal qualification sufficient to prepare them for decent jobs in the private sector, resulting in high unemployment and lack of economic perspectives. By contributing to the SKYE project, Switzerland aims to improve the range of active labour market measures by building capacities within the institutions delivering job-matching services and vocational training, also in order to address root causes for migration.

Tanzania Social Action Fund (TASAF)

Switzerland’s contribution to Tanzania Social Action Fund (TASAF) for the implementation of the Productive Social Safety Net Program (PSSN) contributes to the protection of 1.5 milion poor households in Tanzania Mainland and Zanzibar through cash transfers, public works and livelihoods enhancement. Also evidence generated through this support will inform and reinforce Swiss engagement in national policy dialogue on social protection, beyond PSSN.

Colombia: MIRE+, Assistance to Victims of Violence

The humanitarian crisis in Colombia continues despite growing efforts towards peace. Armed groups fighting for territory and valuable natural resources inflict extreme harm on rural and ethnic communities. In line with the Swiss interest to respond to humanitarian crises, SDC remains dedicated to supporting these communities, enhancing their individual and collective resilience. The project integrates humanitarian action with a developmental and peace orientation (nexus).
Human Rights Grants (HRG) program in Tajikistan

The Human Rights grants program will support local and international organizations working in Tajikistan on acute Human Rights issues. The project will strengthen citizen’s access to information, accountability and transparency of governmental institutions and enhance the quality of the media and information landscape in Uzbekistan. UNESCO as implementing partner has a solid partnership with the government and supports ongoing legislative reforms with expertise, ensuring alignment with international standards, capacity building for key government stakeholders (incl. judiciary, law enforcement bodies) and media competence of professionals.

The project aims to strengthen the protection and promotion of human rights in Uzbekistan ensuring justice for victims of human rights abuses, enhancing civic space, integrating human rights principles into development and implementing UN Human Rights Mechanisms recommendation. Upon invitation by the President of Uzbekistan OHCHR has expanded its presence in the country.
