A giant leap forward in enhancing the diagnosis of cancer

The installation of a modern tomograph in the public hospital in Malta affords access to improved cancer diagnosis for the general public. Until now, patients requiring cancer diagnostic facilities were obliged either to travel abroad or go to a private clinic. Many of Malta’s inhabitants found this impossible for financial reasons. This project therefore reduces inequalities in the Maltese healthcare system.

Uzbekistan: Water Resources Management Sector Project

In Uzbekistan agricultural production almost entirely depends on irrigation. The country is therefore compelled to using existing water resources much more efficiently, especially in irrigation, which consumes over 90% of the water. After the collapse of the Soviet Union the region inherited huge irrigation schemes, and the associated storage facilities were all managed centrally at that time. The newly independent states inherited a system of inefficient water management, seriously deteriorated infrastructure and poor institutional settings all coupled with the prevailing arid geo-climatic features of the region.

Au Mali, l’artisanat de service – comme la menuiserie, la métallurgie, la teinturerie, etc. – s’est développé au point d’occuper aujourd’hui près de 4 millions de personnes, soit un tiers de la population. Gérées de manière traditionnelle en raison du manque de formation des entrepreneurs, ces petites entreprises n’offrent toutefois que peu de revenus. Afin de professionnaliser ces métiers, la Fédération Nationale des Artisans du Mali (FNAM), soutenue par la DDC, organise des formations et des appuis techniques à l’attention de ses 50'000 organisations membres.   

Accessible health insurance for all

The SDC has been involved in improving the level of health in Tanzania since the 1960s. The establishment of a community health fund has been one of the most determining factors in this process, alongside access to better quality care and taking into account the genuine needs of the Tanzanian people. This health insurance system has been designed to also benefit the most disadvantaged individuals.
