Tropical Cyclone Fytia struck northwestern Madagascar on 31 January 2026, killing at least 12–14 people and displacing over 31,000, with more than 200,000 affected by flooding and wind damage. Just days later, Cyclone Gezani made landfall on 10–11 February 2026 in Toamasina with winds up to 185–195 km/h, causing catastrophic destruction, widespread flooding, and at least 20–31 deaths. Authorities reported that up to 75% of Toamasina was destroyed as Gezani displaced thousands, compounded prior damage from Fytia and overwhelming local disaster-response capacity. Due to the severity of the impact, the Malagasy Government issued a request for assistance to the international community. |
