The United Nations Research Institute for Social Development (UNRISD) located in Geneva is an autonomous research institute within the UN system. It undertakes multidisciplinary research and policy analysis on the social dimensions of contemporary development challenges. Guided by its research strategy 2016-2020 entitled “Transformations to Equity and Sustainability”, UNRISD aims at contributing to the understanding of policymakers, United Nations experts, and the public at large about the social dimension of the Sustainable Development Goals.

L’insécurité ainsi que les tensions entre éleveurs et agriculteurs se sont accrues en Afrique de l’Ouest. Une éducation de base de qualité et formation professionnelle adaptées sont des vecteurs de cohésion sociale et de perspectives économiques, constituant des remparts à la violence, surtout pour les jeunes. Le Programme Régional d’Education et formation des Populations Pastorales (PREPP) agit sur ces enjeux. Il vise aussi à ce que les politiques nationales et sous régionales intègrent ces dimensions de paix et de durabilité.

Livelihood and Food Security Trust Fund - LIFT

The Livelihood and Food Security Trust Fund for Myanmar (LIFT) managed by the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) receives contributions from 14 donors. LIFT plays an important role in coordinated donor support to agriculture and rural development. Up to now LIFT has reached 7.2 million people, 2.2 million people live in households with increased income and 326’000 households eat improved diets. With this additional Swiss support, successful LIFT projects will be scaled-up and led to sustainability by end 2018.

Contribution to the South Centre, Geneva

The South Centre is an intergovernmental organization based in Geneva promoting common southern perspectives on multilateral debates, particularly at the UN. With 53 member states from the developing world, the Secretariat produces research and policy briefs to support the participation of developing and emerging countries in multilateral thematic fora and intergovernmental negotiations aiming at promoting awareness on the needs of the South.

Switzerland’s continued support to decentralization and local governance reform in Ukraine builds upon the good results achieved in previous phases. By strengthening capacities of the key national reform stakeholders and improving national policies, SDC will contribute to further advancing the reform. Local governments will be capacitated to effectively use newly transferred competences and resources to provide quality public services (in particular water supply & sanitation and solid waste management) to citizens.

Many of them have been displaced for more than a decade, necessitating a development approach to make more self-reliable. The Global Program on Forced Displacement (GPFD) has been the agenda-setter on this issue in the World Bank. Through its role as the custodian of expertise, it contributes to foster long-term development solutions for the displaced and to make this a priority issue for the Bank.

Maintaining high biodiversity in agro-ecosystems contributes to poverty reduction in rural livelihoods. Better knowledge, tools and institutional arrangements are needed to support poverty alleviation and preserve biodiversity. Considering the current development context in Lao PDR, GRET supports the conservation and sustainable economic use of bamboo and rattan, aiming at improving the livelihood of upland farmers and enhancing the policy environment.

Contribution to the Project on Cervical Cancer Prevention in Moldova

In Moldova, the cervical cancer incidence and mortality of women continues to be high due to very high proportion of late stage diagnoses. An integrated approach to cervical cancer prevention and control combining vaccination and regular cervical screening has the potential to reduce cervical cancer deaths by at least 80%. The project aims at reducing incidence and mortality due to cervical cancer through better access to and use of cost-effective and quality services within organized cervical cancer prevention program.

At a challenging moment, defined by increasing humanitarian needs and constrained financial resources, OCHA has launched a Change Management Process. At the same time the Office is in the process of elaborating its new Strategic Plan for the period 2018 – 2021. It is within this context that Switzerland is taking over the Chairmanship of the ODSG from June 2017 until June 2018. The overall goal of the Swiss ODSG Chairmanship is to support and guide the organization towards a more sustainable position within the humanitarian ecosystem.

Honduras and Guatemala requested the Organization of American States and the United Nations to create mechanisms to combat corruption and impunity. The Support Mission Against Corruption and Impunity in Honduras and the International Commission Against Impunity in Guatemala are supported by international cooperation in improving the justice system, the public prosecutor, and the anti-corruption and Human Rights protection agencies. COSUDE contributes to existing mandates and strengthens regional interchange.
